Head-to-Head
Sandals vs Excellence Resorts: Which Adults-Only All-Inclusive Wins?
Book Sandals if you are traveling as a couple and want the fewest line items on the departure bill — round-trip airport transfers, every restaurant and unlimited scuba for certified divers are all inside the rate, and the brand operates a strict no-tipping policy. Book the Excellence Collection if you want an adults-only resort that will sell a room to two friends, a pair of sisters or a group, which Sandals will not, and which is the single most common reason readers end up here.
The two brands look interchangeable in search results and are not. Sandals is couples-only: the booking rule is two people traveling as a couple, which excludes a girls' trip, a parent and an adult child, and a solo traveler. Excellence Resorts are adults-only by age — eighteen and over, with proof of age required at the Playa Mujeres property — which is a materially different door policy and a different crowd inside it.
The second real difference is what each rate swallows. Sandals includes round-trip airport transfers, worth roughly $150 to $550 depending on the island, and almost no other brand does; it is the most commonly omitted item when people compare headline rates. Excellence's packages are described as covering gratuities and activities, while premium liquor and spa treatments are charged extra, and Excellence Playa Mujeres specifically bills spa treatments, the hydrotherapy circuit and golf.
The third is footprint. The Excellence Collection is eight all-inclusive resorts across Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, under three labels — Beloved for couples only, Excellence for adults only, and Finest for all ages. Sandals spans considerably more of the Caribbean, including the three resorts with overwater suites, which is a product Excellence does not sell anywhere. Rates below are our registry's dated anchors; live pricing is on each button.

The door policy decides this for most readers
Sandals will not sell you a room unless you are booking as a couple. That is not a crowd preference, it is a reservations rule, and it rules the brand out for a long list of trips: two friends who want a beach week, a mother and her adult daughter, three sisters, a solo traveler, a bachelorette party. Excellence Resorts set a minimum age of eighteen instead and will sell to any combination of adults, which is why they come up in the same searches and why they are the answer for everyone the Sandals rule excludes.
The practical consequence inside the resort is a different mix of guests. A couples-only property is, structurally, couples — quieter pools, two-person tables, a honeymoon-weighted atmosphere. An adults-only-by-age property mixes couples with groups of friends, which is livelier and, depending on the week and the property, occasionally much livelier. Neither is better; they are different holidays, and the brochures are no help in telling them apart. Our ranking of all-inclusive resorts for a girls' trip exists precisely because of this split.
Price the transfer and the tip, not the nightly rate
This is where the two brands' rate cards stop being comparable. Sandals includes round-trip airport transfers in the rate — a real inclusion worth roughly $150 to $550 depending on which island and how far the resort is from the airport, and the item almost every published comparison leaves out. Over a week for two people that is not a rounding error, and it is the main reason a Sandals headline rate that looks higher can land lower at checkout.
Excellence runs the trade in the other direction. Its packages are described as including gratuities and activities, which removes the tipping question that follows you around most Mexican and Dominican resorts, but transfers are arranged and billed separately. Sandals is a strict no-tipping brand, with butlers and spa therapists carved out as the exception — budget roughly $20 to $25 per butler per day if you book a Butler Elite category, which for a week is a meaningful number people forget.
Both brands charge for the spa, and Excellence Playa Mujeres additionally charges for the hydrotherapy circuit and golf despite being one of the most complete inclusive products in Mexico. The honest way to compare is to build the whole week — rate, transfers, gratuities, spa, dive trips, the one dinner you will want off property — and compare totals. Our Mexican all-inclusive cost guide and Caribbean cost guide have current figures for both sides of that sum.
The room products do not overlap
If the suite is the reason for the trip, this is the deciding section, because the two brands sell genuinely different things. Sandals owns the Caribbean's only overwater suites outside a handful of independents: Over-the-Water Bungalows at Sandals Grande St. Lucian, two-storey Vincy Overwater Villas at Sandals Saint Vincent running about 1,248 square feet, and the rebuilt overwater product at Sandals Caribbean Cay in Montego Bay when it reopens in December 2026. Excellence has no overwater accommodation anywhere.
What Excellence does sell, better than Sandals does, is the private-pool suite at scale. Excellence Playa Mujeres lists named categories — an Excellence Club Honeymoon Suite with Private Pool and an Excellence Club Honeymoon Two Story Rooftop Terrace Suite with Plunge Pool — inside a 450-suite resort with eleven restaurants, eleven bars and seven pools, thirty kilometres from Cancun International. That is privacy you can book by name rather than hope for at check-in.
Both brands run a butler or concierge tier, and the tiers are not equivalent. Sandals Butler Elite assigns a dedicated butler to the suite; the Excellence Club is a concierge tier with private lounges and reserved areas. If a named person who unpacks your case and books your restaurants is the point, Sandals is the stronger product — our butler-service ranking sets out what each brand's tier actually does.
Where each brand puts you
Geography is the quiet tiebreaker. Excellence concentrates in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, with one Jamaican property, which means short flights from most US gateways and the lowest-cost adults-only inclusive weeks in the region — and, on the Mexican Caribbean and Dominican coasts, exposure to the April-to-October sargassum influx and the Atlantic hurricane season.
Sandals spreads further down the island chain, which buys variety at the cost of flight time and transfer time: St. Lucia's Hewanorra is seventy-five to ninety minutes from the north-west resorts by road, and Saint Vincent's Argyle forty-five to seventy-five. The upside is the scenery and the water — the Pitons, the Grenadines, the reefs — which the flat Yucatán coast cannot match, and the overwater product that only Sandals sells.
Our reviewed registry currently covers four Sandals resorts and no Excellence property, which is a gap we are explicit about rather than papering over: the scores below belong to the Sandals side only, and the Excellence assessment here is built from operator and seller publications. If you want the Mexican adults-only field ranked across brands, the best adults-only all-inclusive resorts and the best honeymoon resorts in Mexico are the pages to read next.
The verdict
For a couple whose priority is a single predictable number, Sandals wins, and it wins on inclusions rather than on resort quality: transfers in the rate, every restaurant open to every guest, unlimited scuba for certified divers, no tipping except butlers and therapists, and the only overwater suites in the Caribbean. Our highest-scored property of the four we have reviewed is Sandals Grande St. Lucian at 9.0, with an anchor rate from about $320 per person per night as of September 2026.
For anyone not traveling as a couple — friends, siblings, a parent and adult child, a group — Sandals is not an option at all, and Excellence is the best adults-only alternative with a comparable standard. It is also the stronger choice if a private-pool suite matters more than an overwater deck, or if you want to be ninety minutes from a US gateway rather than five hours.
The one comparison that is not close: do not choose between them on headline rate. Sandals carries the transfer and Excellence carries the gratuities, and those two items alone can invert a shortlist over seven nights for two people.
Pick Sandals if
You are traveling as a couple, you want transfers, scuba and every restaurant inside one rate, and an overwater suite or a dedicated butler is on your list.
Pick Excellence if
You are not traveling as a couple, or you want a named private-pool suite at an 18-plus resort a short flight from the US with gratuities already in the package.

Frequently Asked Questions
- No. Sandals is couples-only — the reservations rule is two guests traveling as a couple, which excludes friends traveling together, a parent with an adult child, groups and solo travelers. Beaches, the family brand from the same company, has no such rule, and adults-only-by-age brands such as Excellence (18+) will sell to any combination of adults.
