Sandals vs Couples Resorts: Which Couples-Only All-Inclusive?

The gate is the same, so it is not the axis

Both brands are couples-only, and both enforce it. Sandals sells every room to two adults aged eighteen or over traveling together; it dropped its former restriction to opposite-sex couples in 2004. Couples Resorts states its policy as "adults only, couples only," with a minimum age of eighteen, and its own FAQ says singles cannot stay unless they are part of a contracted group. Children are admitted to a Couples property only for a wedding ceremony and must leave straight after it.

That means the question that decides most brand comparisons in this category — can two friends share a room, can a solo traveler book — has the same answer on both sides: no. Everything below assumes you are two adults traveling together and are choosing between the only two brands built for exactly that.

Geography: Jamaica-only versus the whole Caribbean

This is the first real fork. Couples Resorts is a Jamaican company — part of the Issa family's House of Issa, headquartered in Montego Bay — and it has never left the island. Its four resorts split into two pairs: Couples Tower Isle (226 rooms and suites, the original, on the site of a hotel that opened in 1949) and Couples Sans Souci (150 rooms and suites, built around mineral springs and gardens) in Ocho Rios; Couples Swept Away (312 suites on Seven Mile Beach, with a ten-acre sports complex) and Couples Negril (234 rooms and suites, opened 1999) in Negril. If you want St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, the Bahamas, Barbados, Curaçao or Saint Vincent, Couples has nothing to offer.

Sandals operates seventeen resorts across the Caribbean, seven of them in Jamaica — Montego Bay, Caribbean Cay (formerly Royal Caribbean), South Coast, Negril, Ochi, Dunn's River and Royal Plantation — plus properties on six other islands. For a couple whose only fixed requirement is "couples-only all-inclusive," Sandals gives you a choice of island; Couples gives you a choice of two Jamaican coasts. Inclusions: the baseline is shared, the extras are where Couples pulls ahead

The things that make Sandals look generous next to Secrets — scuba diving for certified divers, round-trip airport transfers, premium spirits, and gratuities inside the rate — are all in the Couples rate too. Couples includes daily dives with resort equipment and offers certification, runs complimentary round-trip transfers from Montego Bay's Sangster airport for all four resorts, and enforces a strict no-tipping policy on the basis that a share of the room rate is already a gratuity for every member of staff. Sandals' rule is the same in substance: tipping is not permitted except for spa services and butlers. On the headline inclusions, this is a draw.

Where Couples pulls ahead is the layer of small things that are routinely chargeable elsewhere. Unlimited golf at two championship courses is in the rate. A stocked in-room bar is in every room, where Sandals reserves that for Club Level categories and above. And two excursions that most resorts sell as day trips are included: the climb at Dunn's River Falls, with transport and entrance, for guests of the two Ocho Rios resorts, and a catamaran cruise with swimming off the hull for guests of the two Negril resorts — up to four times a week, on a three-night minimum, and not available at Sans Souci or Tower Isle. The brand values its inclusions at about $1,700 per couple per week; you do not have to accept that figure to see that the list is longer.

Sandals' counter is depth rather than breadth. Its largest resorts run to as many as sixteen restaurants and eleven bars with no specialty surcharge, against seven restaurants at the biggest Couples property; scuba is a signature of the brand rather than an add-on; and the top suites come with a butler. Which side of that trade is worth more depends entirely on whether you would actually use the golf, the falls and the cruise — if you would, Couples has quietly folded several hundred dollars of Jamaica into the rate.

Room product: Sandals has the ceiling, Couples has the floor

Sandals' top end simply does not exist at Couples. Overwater bungalows and villas at four resorts — Caribbean Cay and South Coast in Jamaica, Grande St. Lucian in St. Lucia, and two-story overwater villas at Saint Vincent — swim-up suites, private plunge pools, Skypool suites, and butler service on the highest categories. Couples' room product is oceanfront rooms and suites with verandas and, at the two Ocho Rios resorts, the Oasis Spa Villas — private villas with sun terraces and plunge pools, unlimited spa services and in-villa dining, which is the brand's answer to a butler suite and a genuinely different luxury: treatments rather than a person. There is no overwater category, no swim-up category at scale, and no butler tier anywhere in the brand.

The corollary is that Couples' entry-level rooms compare well against Sandals' entry-level rooms, because the stocked bar and the excursions come with the cheapest category rather than being unlocked by an upgrade. Couples is the stronger buy at the bottom of the range; Sandals is the only buy at the top of it.

Exchange privileges and loyalty

Both brands let you use a sister resort, but not on the same terms. Sandals' Stay at One, Play at All program gives guests the run of the other Sandals resorts on the island — restaurants, bars, beaches, activities — with one published caveat in Jamaica: only guests of Sandals Royal Plantation hold exchange privileges with every other Sandals on the island, and guests elsewhere exchange with every resort except Royal Plantation. No day pass, no wristband, no fixed schedule.

Couples' equivalent is the Trading Places pass, and it is more constrained. It is a benefit of the Romance Rewards loyalty program, it works within each pair — Swept Away with Negril, Sans Souci with Tower Isle — on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays, with a morning departure and a return no later than 4 p.m., once per stay and subject to availability. The visiting day includes food, drink and the property's activities. It is a good perk; it is not the open-door arrangement Sandals runs.

On loyalty, both are in-brand programs: Sandals Select Rewards earns points and perks across the Sandals and Beaches portfolio, and Romance Rewards does the same across the four Couples resorts, with the Trading Places pass and a gift-giving procedure for repeat guests who want to thank staff despite the no-tipping rule. Neither converts into a global hotel currency the way a Hyatt-affiliated brand does, so the loyalty question, unlike in Sandals vs Secrets, is a wash.

Atmosphere: lavish versus down-to-earth

The most consistent thing guests who have stayed at both say — across Tripadvisor, Fodor's and wedding forums — is a version of the same sentence: Sandals is more lavish, Couples is more down-to-earth. Sandals resorts are larger, more polished, more themed and more sociable, with a full entertainment program, a strong honeymoon culture, and a finish that guests describe as brass-and-glass. Couples is smaller-scale, quieter, more Jamaican in feel, and built around the idea that a couple came to be together rather than to be entertained.

Two Couples-specific features shape that atmosphere and are worth knowing about before you book. Three of the four resorts have designated au naturel areas — a private offshore island at Tower Isle, open nine to five; Sunset Beach at Sans Souci, on seasonal hours; a semi-private beach section at Couples Negril — while Swept Away has none. And Couples Swept Away is built around a ten-acre sports and fitness complex on Seven Mile Beach, which gives it a wellness-and-activity character that no Sandals in Jamaica has. Sandals has no clothing-optional areas anywhere.

Neither atmosphere is better. The question is whether you want a resort holiday with a lot going on, or a quieter, more local week where the brand's main effort goes into the two of you.

2026 timing: which resorts are actually open

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in October 2025, and the two brands came out of it very differently. Couples reports that it avoided the worst of the storm — Ocho Rios was less affected, and the two Negril resorts lost some trees and suffered minor roof damage and debris — and all four Couples resorts reopened on December 1, 2025. Independent status boards as of mid-September 2026 list all four as open.

Sandals took the opportunity to accelerate a rebuild. Three of its seven Jamaica resorts are closed under the US$200 million Sandals 2.0 program: Sandals South Coast reopens November 18, 2026, and Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay — the renamed Royal Caribbean, growing from 207 to 291 rooms with new swim-up and Skypool categories and an expanded private-island experience — reopen December 18, 2026. Sandals Negril, Sandals Ochi, Sandals Dunn's River and Sandals Royal Plantation are open. Bookings for post-reopening dates at the three closed properties are being taken now.

For a trip before mid-November 2026, that means Couples has four Jamaica resorts to choose from and Sandals has four — an even count, but the Sandals four do not include either Montego Bay overwater property.
