Editorial Policy & Methodology
This page explains how we choose the resorts we cover, how we score them, where our facts come from, and how we keep everything current. It is the standard every page on this site is held to.
How we select resorts
We focus on the resorts affluent travelers are actually deciding between — primarily luxury overwater villa resorts in the Maldives and luxury all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico at launch. We prioritize properties with enough published information and verified guest data to assess fairly, and we only feature a resort in a best-of list if we can link to a full review or are confident in the assessment.
How we score: the rubric
Every resort review is scored out of 10 across five criteria, which combine into an overall score:
- Rooms & Villas — design, space, privacy, the in-villa experience (pools, decks, views).
- Food & Inclusions — dining quality and variety, and what is genuinely included versus charged à la carte.
- Service — staff-to-guest ratio, butler service, consistency, the small touches.
- Beach & Pool — the setting: house reef, beach quality, pools, and natural surroundings.
- Value— what you get for the rate, judged against the property’s peers, not against budget travel.
These scores are our own editorial assessments, not third-party ratings or aggregated guest review scores. They reflect how a property performs against the standards of the luxury category.
Experience and honesty
We do not claim to have stayed somewhere we haven’t. Where an editor has genuine firsthand experience of a property, we say so explicitly. Where we have not, we frame our assessment as based on published brand specifications, verified guest data, and our comparison research. Every review includes a mandatory “The Catch” section documenting the real downsides — this candor is central to our value.
Sourcing
Factual claims — transfer costs, seasonal pricing, resort specifications, inclusions, best time to visit — are drawn from official brand pages, verified guest-review aggregates, and reputable travel-data sources, and are cited in a “Sources” section where relevant. We never present an estimate as a measured fact, and we mark uncertainty plainly.
How we make money
The Gilded Escape earns affiliate commissions when readers book through our links. This never affects our scores, rankings, or recommendations. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Updates and corrections
Every money page carries a “last updated” date and is reviewed at least quarterly, because rates, inclusions, and program availability change constantly. Seasonal content is refreshed ahead of peak booking windows. When we make an error, we correct it promptly and note material changes. To report an inaccuracy, please contact us.
