The festive rate you are quoted is rarely the out-the-door price. Expect a compulsory gala-dinner supplement per adult on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve or both, a minimum stay of seven to ten nights, non-refundable prepayment, and transfers billed separately. Between roughly 20 December and 3 January, luxury resorts run on a different commercial model from the rest of the year. Rates rise, but more importantly the terms change — and the terms are where travelers get caught out. A resort quoting a nightly rate that looks only modestly higher than November can easily cost fifty percent more once the compulsory extras are counted.

The compulsory gala dinner

This is the single largest festive add-on and the one most often missing from the headline rate. Resorts stage a gala evening on 24 December, 31 December or both, and guests in residence on those dates are charged for it whether they attend or not. It is not presented as an option on most rate sheets.

The numbers are real and sizeable. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island publishes a compulsory New Year's Eve supplement for 31 December 2026 of USD 1,093.95 per adult inclusive of taxes, which includes the gala dinner; children five and under are free and six to eleven pay half. Siyam World publishes mandatory gala dinner charges of US$500 per adult and US$255 per child for guests staying over 24 and 31 December. Two very different properties, the same structure.

The trap is staying across both dates. If a resort charges separately for the Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve galas, a couple spanning both pays four adult supplements, not two. Ask specifically: is the supplement per gala, or one charge for the stay?

Minimum stays and why they exist

Festive minimum stays of seven nights are standard at resort properties and ten nights is not unusual across the Christmas-to-New-Year span. This is the constraint that most changes the total, because it removes your ability to buy only the nights you want.

The commercial logic is straightforward. The festive fortnight is the one period a resort can sell out entirely, and short stays fragment the inventory — a three-night booking over New Year leaves unsellable gaps on either side. The minimum protects occupancy. It is not arbitrary, but it does mean the advertised nightly rate has to be multiplied by a number the resort chose, not by a number you chose.

Practical consequence: when comparing two resorts, compare the minimum-stay total plus supplements, not the nightly rate. A property at a higher nightly rate with a five-night minimum can easily undercut a cheaper one demanding ten.

Deposits and cancellation change too

Outside the festive window, most luxury resorts hold a booking on a one-night deposit with free cancellation up to somewhere between seven and thirty days out. Over Christmas and New Year that frequently becomes full prepayment, non-refundable, from the moment you book.

That is a genuinely different risk profile, and it is worth pricing. If you are booking nine months ahead on non-refundable terms, travel insurance that actually covers cancellation for the reasons likely to affect you stops being optional. Read the festive terms as a separate document from the property's standard policy, because that is effectively what they are.

Transfers: the Maldives-specific trap

In the Maldives the transfer is a second ticket, and at festive dates it is rarely discounted. Conrad Maldives, again publishing plainly, notes that villa rates exclude transfers and that a seaplane at US$700 net per adult or a speedboat transfer is mandatory. For a couple that is US$1,400 before the first night, and the resort's published 30% seaplane saving applied to a window that ended on 30 September 2026 — well outside the festive period.

Every Maldivian resort works this way; the figures differ. Build the transfer into the comparison, because a resort forty minutes further out by seaplane can cost several hundred dollars more per person than one reachable by speedboat, and that gap does not show up in the nightly rate at all. How to price a festive week properly

Do it in one line, per property: (nightly rate × the resort's minimum nights) + (gala supplement × adults × number of galas you span) + (transfer × people) + meal plan if it is not included. Then compare. That number is frequently thirty to fifty percent above the figure you first saw, and it moves the ranking of properties around considerably.

It is also the number to take to a booking. Once you have it, a resort's willingness to waive a gala supplement for a longer stay, or to include a meal plan, becomes a negotiable that you can actually evaluate. Without it, you are comparing headline rates that mean different things at different properties.
