Soneva Jani vs Conrad Rangali: Which Maldives Resort?
These are two of the most recognisable resorts in the Maldives and they sit at opposite ends of the market's logic. Soneva Jani is a barefoot-luxury private-lagoon property in Noonu Atoll where the villas are the product — retractable roofs over the bed, water slides from the deck, and a density low enough that privacy is close to absolute. It is among the most expensive resorts in the country.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a two-island resort in South Ari Atoll built around a different proposition: scale, variety, a famous underwater restaurant, whale sharks in the atoll year-round, and Hilton Honors value that no independent ultra-luxury island can match. It is meaningfully less expensive and, for many travelers, better value.
We have reviewed both in full and scored them on our rubric — 9.6 and 9.1 respectively — but that half-point gap conceals a much larger difference in what each one is actually for. Below we compare them on villas, reef, dining, transfers and cost.

The villas: Soneva Jani, decisively
Soneva Jani's Water Reserve and Water Retreat villas are the benchmark for the category. Often 400 square metres and up, built over the lagoon with a private pool and multiple decks, they carry a retractable roof that slides back at the touch of a button to open the master bedroom to the sky — and several categories include a curving water slide from the upper deck into the lagoon. Our rooms score for the property is 9.8, among the highest we have awarded anywhere.
Conrad Rangali's accommodation is very good without being extraordinary, with one enormous exception: the underwater villa, a bedroom set beneath the surface with the reef around it. That is a genuinely unique piece of engineering and a legitimate reason to book. Across the standard categories, though, Soneva's villa product is a clear tier ahead.
The water: Conrad, on marine life
South Ari Atoll is one of very few places on earth where whale sharks are present year-round rather than seasonally, and Conrad Rangali is the best-known luxury base for reaching them. If your dates are fixed and the encounter is the point of the trip, that reliability is worth more than any villa feature — the Maldives' other headline aggregation, at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, runs only from roughly June to November.
Soneva Jani has a genuinely expansive house reef reachable straight off the villa deck, which is a different and in some ways better daily experience — you snorkel before breakfast rather than booking an excursion. Noonu's reef is strong. But for a specific, reliable, world-class marine encounter, Conrad's atoll wins.
Layout and who each suits
Conrad's two-island structure, joined by a bridge, is quietly one of the best configurations in the country for a mixed party. A busier main island with the restaurants and facilities, a quieter one for calm, and no boat needed to move between them — which is genuinely useful when adults and children want different afternoons.
Soneva Jani is a single near-private lagoon with a very low villa count, and the barefoot 'no news, no shoes' ethos runs through everything. It is more secluded, more informal, and less varied. Families do well there — the water slides are the best amenity for a child in the Maldives — but it is a resort designed around a single mood rather than several.
Dining and inclusions
Neither is all-inclusive by default and both require a board decision, which in the Maldives is unavoidable because there is nowhere else to eat. Soneva Jani's dining is largely à la carte and expensive, and we would treat a half-board or full-board upgrade as effectively mandatory rather than optional — it is the most common budgeting mistake guests make there.
Conrad Rangali has a broader restaurant lineup across its two islands, including the underwater restaurant, and the sheer number of venues makes a week easier to vary. Its scale keeps pricing more moderate than Soneva's, and Hilton Honors points and status benefits soften the effective cost in a way that has no equivalent on the independent side.
Getting there
Both require a seaplane and both are therefore bound by the daylight-only operating window — broadly 06:00 to 18:00 — which means a late international arrival can cost you a night near Malé at either. Soneva Jani's Noonu Atoll hop runs roughly 40 minutes at around $500–$600 per person round trip; Conrad's South Ari transfer is comparable in kind.
Neither is speedboat-accessible, so if avoiding the seaplane is a priority — with young children, or on a tight arrival schedule — both are the wrong answer and a North Malé resort like One&Only Reethi Rah is the better booking. Value
Soneva Jani starts from around $2,400 a night before meals and is among the most expensive resorts in the country; its value score is the weakest part of its rubric at 8.8 precisely because you are paying a clear premium for the villa engineering and the brand. That is a rational purchase if the villa is the reason for the trip and an irrational one if it is not.
Conrad Rangali sits below that tier, and once Hilton Honors value is factored in the effective gap widens further. For a seven-night stay, the difference between the two can fund a substantially longer trip or a materially better board basis. The verdict
Soneva Jani has the better villa and it is not a close contest — the retractable roofs, the lagoon slides and the scale of the water reserves put it at the top of the global overwater market, and our 9.6 overall score is the highest we have given any resort. If this is a once-in-a-decade trip and the room is the reason for it, book Soneva and budget properly for the board basis.
Conrad Rangali is the better all-round week for most travelers. Two islands to move between, a broader restaurant lineup, an underwater restaurant and villa, whale sharks in the atoll year-round rather than seasonally, and Hilton Honors value that materially reduces the effective cost. It scores half a point lower and is, for the majority of trips, the more sensible booking.
