Head-to-Head
Maldives vs Mauritius: Which Indian Ocean Trip Should You Book?
Book the Maldives if the villa and the water are the holiday — it is the world capital of the overwater villa, it has the better reef by a wide margin, and nothing in Mauritius comes close to a water villa with a private pool and a ladder into a house reef. Book Mauritius if you want a country rather than a resort: one large volcanic island with roads, towns, mountains, waterfalls, long public beaches and restaurants you do not have to book through your hotel.
But before either of those arguments, check your dates, because the two destinations run on nearly opposite calendars and that decides more bookings than any feature comparison. The Maldives' peak is the dry northeast monsoon from November to April. That same window is Mauritius's cyclone season, with the highest risk from January to March and February the most active month. Mauritius is at its best from roughly May to October — exactly the Maldives' wetter, cheaper southwest monsoon.
So a January honeymoon points at the Maldives and a July one points at Mauritius, almost regardless of which you would prefer in the abstract. That is an unusually clean rule for a travel comparison, and it is the first thing we would check if you asked us this question directly.
The overwater difference is starker than most people expect. Mauritius has essentially one overwater resort — Constance Prince Maurice, known for its Junior Suites on Stilts built over a natural fish reserve and lagoon, with stilted-suite rates typically running $500 to $900 a night — against dozens of overwater resorts across the Maldivian atolls. Our registry anchors the Maldivian side from about $700 a night at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island to $2,400 at Soneva Jani as of September 2026. We hold no reviewed Mauritian property, so that side of this page is built from operator and published sources and we say so rather than inventing a score.

The calendars are opposites, and that settles most bookings
This is the most useful fact on the page. The Maldives is at its most reliable from November to April, the dry northeast monsoon, with calm seas and the clearest snorkelling visibility — and December to March is its priciest stretch of the year. Mauritius spends those same months in its cyclone season: published sources put the season from November to April, the highest risk from January to March, and February as the most active month.
Run it the other way and the inversion holds. Mauritius is at its best through the May-to-October winter, with October frequently singled out as the pick of the year, while that same window is the Maldivian southwest monsoon — humid, wetter, windier, and the cheap half of the Maldivian calendar. Our cheapest time to visit the Maldives guide covers what that discount does and does not buy you.
The practical consequence: if your dates are fixed by a wedding, school holidays or anything else, the date mostly picks the destination. January or February, take the Maldives. July through October, take Mauritius — with the caveat that Mauritian winds are strongest on the east and south coasts in July and August, so a west or north coast resort is the safer choice in those two months. Only if your dates are genuinely flexible does the rest of this page become the deciding factor.
Mauritius is a country; the Maldives is a collection of resorts
This is the structural difference everything else follows from. Mauritius is a single large volcanic island with mountains, waterfalls, forest, towns and a capital, and published guides are consistent that it supports independent exploration in a way the Maldives does not — you can hire a car, drive to Port Louis, walk in the Black River Gorges, eat at a restaurant nobody's hotel owns. A Maldivian resort island is a closed market: one operator, no competing restaurants, no roads, nowhere to walk to.
That cuts in Mauritius's favor for a certain kind of traveler and against it for another. If you get restless after three days on a resort, or you are traveling with someone who does, Mauritius has a second week's worth of things to do and the Maldives genuinely does not — our how many days in the Maldives guide exists partly because the honest answer there is bounded by exactly this.
The flip side is exclusivity. Mauritian beaches are public and long, which means the sand in front of your resort is shared with anyone who walks onto it, including vendors and day visitors. On a Maldivian resort island the beach is yours and the other guests', full stop. For a honeymoon where the point is not seeing anyone, that difference is worth more than a drive to a waterfall — and it is the single most common complaint from travelers who booked Mauritius expecting a private-island feel.
The overwater villa belongs to the Maldives
If the water villa is the reason for the trip, this section ends the comparison. The Maldives is the world capital of the format, with dozens of resorts selling villas that now routinely include a private infinity pool, direct lagoon access, glass floor panels and — at the top — retractable roofs and slides from the deck into the sea. Mauritius has essentially one overwater resort: Constance Prince Maurice, whose Junior Suites on Stilts are built over a natural fish reserve and lagoon, with stilted-suite rates typically $500 to $900 a night.
That is not a criticism of Prince Maurice, which is a genuinely good hotel and a lovely version of the format at a fraction of top-end Maldivian pricing. It is a statement about inventory: one resort's worth of stilted suites against an entire national industry. If your dates are busy or you want a choice of price tiers, villa sizes or atolls, the Maldives is the only one of the two that offers any.
The reef gap runs the same way. The Maldives has over a thousand fish species, the world's largest manta population at Hanifaru Bay and year-round whale sharks; Mauritius has pleasant lagoon snorkelling and good diving but nothing comparable at the villa-to-reef scale. Our best overwater bungalows ranking and the Maldives overwater list set out what the top of that category looks like, and the cheapest Maldivian overwater villas cover the entry tier.
Where each one gets expensive
The headline rates overlap more than their reputations suggest — our registry anchors Conrad Maldives Rangali Island from about $700 a night as of September 2026, which sits inside luxury-Mauritius territory, and Prince Maurice's stilted suites at $500 to $900 are not far below it. The difference is what gets added on top.
In the Maldives, three line items do the damage. The transfer: a seaplane or speedboat at roughly $250 to $600 per person, about $500 to $600 round trip to a resort like Soneva Jani, a flat cost regardless of how long you stay. The board basis: close to mandatory, at roughly $150 to $400 or more per person per day, because there is no off-island dining — our Maldives meal plans guide decodes the BB, HB, FB and all-inclusive codes. And the closed market: every drink, excursion and spa treatment comes from a single vendor with no alternative within forty miles. Our Maldives trip cost guide builds the whole total.
Mauritius avoids most of that structurally. The airport transfer is a road transfer, you can eat off property, and the island's own restaurants and tour operators compete for your money. What Mauritius adds instead is the journey: no nonstop from the US, roughly 24 hours via London, Paris, Dubai or Johannesburg, with some itineraries running 25 to 31 hours — so a short trip is poor value no matter which you choose, and both reward seven nights or more.
The verdict
Check the calendar first. A trip between November and April points at the Maldives — that is its dry season and the clearest, calmest water of its year, while Mauritius is in cyclone season with the highest risk from January to March. A trip between May and October points at Mauritius, which is at its best then, while the Maldives is in its wetter, windier, cheaper southwest monsoon.
With dates flexible, choose by what you want the week to be. The Maldives if the villa and the reef are the holiday: the overwater format at every price tier, a private resort island, over a thousand fish species and the Hanifaru mantas — and budget the seaplane and the meal plan, which together move the real total a long way from the nightly rate. Mauritius if you want to leave the resort: a volcanic island with roads, waterfalls, a capital city and independent restaurants, plus one genuinely good stilted-suite option at Constance Prince Maurice.
The mistake to avoid is booking Mauritius expecting the Maldives. Its beaches are public and long rather than private and exclusive, and its overwater inventory is one resort. Go for the island, the variety and the shorter internal logistics — not for a cheaper version of a water villa, which is not what it is.
Pick Maldives if
You are traveling between November and April, the overwater villa and the house reef are the point, and you want a private island with a choice of resorts and price tiers.
Pick Mauritius if
You are traveling between May and October, you want a country you can drive around with public beaches and real restaurants, and you would rather skip the seaplane and the compulsory meal plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
- It depends mostly on when you are going. The Maldives is better from November to April — its dry season, with the calmest seas and clearest visibility — while those months are Mauritius's cyclone season, with the highest risk from January to March. Mauritius is better from May to October, when it is at its best and the Maldives is in its wetter southwest monsoon. On features rather than timing: the Maldives for the overwater villa and the reef, Mauritius for a country you can explore independently.
